Spoken word is poetry that is written to be performed. It can be rhythmic or rhyming; it can focus on social justice issues, but it doesn't have to. At its core, spoken word is fearless self-expression: a powerful intersection of art, activism and community that GW has yet to fully harness.
The GW Spoken Word Collective, also known as Speakers of the House, is a supportive space for students to develop and showcase their poetic voices as a means of spreading campus awareness of social justice issues. As a community at the intersection of art and activism, we dedicate ourselves to upholding the core values of creativity and empowerment; social justice and equality; and collaboration, compassion, and respect.
We are poets, artists, advocates and most often friends, and come together once a week to read and workshop our own poetic works in a safe and friendly environment. We also endeavor to explore the greater spoken word community through group outings to DC-area open mic nights, and organize campus-wide workshops, open mic nights and showcases throughout each semester.
